Current vs Target Asset Allocation Report

The purpose of the Current vs. Target Asset Allocation report is to compare the breakdown of the account's asset allocation with a target asset allocation, either provided by Morningstar or created under the Workspace tab. Click here for more information on working with asset allocation sets.

To access the report, open either a transactional or quick account and then from the top menu, click on Reports, Portfolio, Current vs. Target Asset Allocation.

Note: This report can also be generated from the client level as an aggregated or segregated report for all accounts within the client. Additional options are available when generated from the client level.

Report Options
  1. Click the drop-down menu and select Yes or No to include a Cover Page.

  2. Set the As of Date for the report. The date can be typed into the field or use the drop-down calendar to select a date.

  3. Specify the Asset Allocation to be used. This will be the allocation that the report will be based on when displaying asset classes. Options include Morningstar Security Category, Morningstar Consolidated, Morningstar Basic, and Morningstar Expanded, as well as any manually created asset allocations. Click here for instructions on creating a custom asset allocation reporting set.

  4. Click the magnifying glass icon to select the Target Asset Allocation. This will be the asset allocation you are comparing with your current account.

  5. Use the drop-down menu to select the Report By option. This determines how the asset allocations will be displayed, either by Asset Class Only or by Asset Class with Security.

  6. From the drop-down menu, select how the Report Type will be displayed. Options include PDF or Excel format.

  7. Check the Report Portfolio Asset Allocation Only option to generate the report displaying only the current account's asset allocation data without comparing it to a target allocation.

  8. When checked, the Display Available Cash option displays a separate section at the end of the report with details of the available cash in the account. The security name, symbol, and current market value of each cash security in the account will be listed as well as a total cash market value.

  9. Select Mask Account Number to limit the amount of an account number that is displayed on the report. This inserts a level of security when reports are e-mailed to clients or uploaded to the Web via the Client Web Portal. Click here to see how the masked account number will be represented (based on the number of characters in the account number).

  10. If you choose to include a Cover Page, you can also use the option to Add disclosure to cover page. Click here for more information.

  11. When selected along with using a cover page, the Add blank 2nd page option inserts a blank page between the cover page and first page of the report.

Additional Client Level Report Options

When the Report Accounts Aggregated option is selected, the program combines all the client's accounts and treats them as one account. If the Report Accounts Segregated option is selected, all of the client's accounts are displayed individually within one PDF. The options can both be selected and will generate two separate reports.

The information below describes each column of the report.

Account Name - This heading changes based on the selected account type. It will be the account name if the report is for a single account, "account aggregates for 'client name'" if the report is for account aggregates, or "client aggregates for 'client name'" if the report is for client aggregates.

Asset Allocation Graphs - Portfolio Asset Allocation and Target Asset Allocation graphs appear on the top portion of the report. These appear as pie charts unless a negative allocation is held. That would require a bar graph to be displayed in order to show the negative value.

Description - This changes based on the Report By option selected. The Asset Class Only option shows only the class name, while the Asset Class with Security option displays the class name and any securities that are included in the class.

Current Market Value - The market value as of the report date for the asset class. If securities are shown as part of the class, their individual market values are also displayed.

Portfolio Asset Allocation (%) - The percentage of the portfolio held in each asset class. If securities are shown as part of the class, their percentage of the total portfolio is also displayed.

Target Asset Allocation (%) - The percentage of the class allocated to the overall target allocation.

Difference - The percentage that needs to be reallocated within the class to reach the desired target allocation percentage.

Approximate Transaction Value - The approximate reallocation value needed within the class to reach the desired target allocation percentage.
